What Is Non-Surgical Endodontics?

Non-surgical endodontics refers to procedures used to restore the health of teeth without cutting into the gum tissue. The goal of non-surgical endodontic procedures is to treat and prevent infections of the dental pulp, the soft tissue at the center of each tooth, in order preserve the natural teeth.

Benefits of Non-Surgical Endodontics

  • Save your natural teeth. Non-surgical endodontic procedures such as root canal treatment can save teeth that are severely decayed or damaged, allowing them to remain in place in your mouth for a natural function and smile.
  • Prevent discomfort. Preventive root canal treatment can prevent an at-risk tooth from developing an uncomfortable infection.
  • Keep infection from spreading. An infected tooth will quickly spread to neighboring teeth and tissues if it goes untreated. Non-surgical endodontic treatment can treat the infection before it spreads.
  • Non-invasive. There is no cutting of tissue required for non-surgical endodontics. This means there will be no need for stitches and your recovery will be much faster.

Procedures Offered

  • Root Canal treatment. During root canal treatment the dental pulp is removed from the tooth and replaced with composite material that fortifies the tooth and prevents reinfection. In many cases a crown will be placed over the tooth after root canal treatment to protect the remaining tooth material.
  • Endodontic Retreatment. When a tooth has had a root canal, but the infection returns, endodontic retreatment may be necessary. This procedure is essentially a repeat root canal, but a more thorough process to ensure that the entire root canal is cleaned out. Advanced technology makes it possible to access complex root canal structures.

Frequently Asked Questions About Non-Surgical Endodontics

Does root canal treatment hurt?

Local anesthesia is the primary form of anesthesia used for roaot canal treatment. It numbs the nerves in the area of the mouth that is being treated so that you won’t feel any pain from the procedure. If you are feeling anxious about the procedure, sedation may be provided to help you relax.

How long does root canal treatment take?

A typical root canal may take anywhere from 60-90 minutes. A smaller tooth with a less complex root structure will take closer to an hour, and a larger tooth with a more complex root structure may take closer to 90 minutes.

Why do I need a repeat root canal?

Endodontic retreatment is sometimes required when a tooth develops a new infection after already receiving root canal treatment. This may happen if all of the dental pulp or infection was not removed during the first root canal, which may occur if the root structure is complex with multiple canals.

Is non-surgical endodontics as effective as surgical procedures?

In many cases non-surgical endodontic treatment is completely effective at treating a tooth. In other cases, more invasive surgical treatment may be necessary for the best chance of saving the tooth. Dr. Kirpal will recommend the best procedure for your needs.

Do I need a crown after root canal treatment?

In most cases, the tooth will need to be fitted with a crown by your dentist after a root canal. If the tooth was severely decayed, cracked, or otherwise damaged a crown will protect the remaining tooth material and the root.

Can my crown be reused after endodontic retreatment?

Sometimes the same crown can be placed back over the tooth after a repeat root canal. It depends on whether or not there is a significant amount of decay under the crown. The tooth may not be the same size after treatment, meaning a new crown will need to be made by your dentist.
